What Is Infrared Sauna Therapy?
The therapeutic application of heat has been an integral component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries, traditionally used to enhance circulation, dispel pathogenic cold and dampness, and support systemic balance.
Today, infrared sauna therapy provides a modern, evidence-informed method of heat delivery to help reduce inflammation, relieve pain and improve circulation. Unlike conventional saunas that heat the ambient air, infrared saunas utilize infrared light to directly warm the body’s tissues. Operating at lower temperatures (typically 110°F to 140°F, versus 160°F to 200°F in traditional saunas), infrared sauna therapy provides a more tolerable and accessible treatment environment for a wider range of individuals. This form of heat allows for deeper thermal penetration, facilitating detoxification, improved circulation, and cellular repair and regeneration.
Benefits of Infrared Sauna Therapy
Clinical studies and peer-reviewed research have shown that regular infrared sauna use may help:
Detoxify the body by sweating out heavy metals, plastics, and other environmental toxins
Reduce inflammation and chronic pain, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, and joint stiffness
Improve cardiovascular function and lower blood pressure
Support mental health, reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and chronic stress
Enhance muscle recovery and reduce exercise-induced soreness
Increase circulation and support healthy skin by boosting collagen production
Promote restful sleep by calming the nervous system
Studies have also noted improvements in immune response, insulin sensitivity, and mitochondrial function — contributing to overall longevity and resilience.
Infrared sauna therapy can support a wide range of conditions, including:
Chronic pain (e.g., back pain, arthritis, muscle soreness)
Poor circulation or cold extremities
Fatigue, low vitality, or infertiity (especially in Yang-deficient individuals)
Detoxification (e.g., after mold exposure, heavy metals, or medications)
Skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis
Stress, anxiety, and insomnia
Weight management and metabolic sluggishness
It’s also an excellent adjunct to acupuncture, gua sha, cupping, and herbal therapy — helping prepare the body to release deeper layers of tension and toxin buildup.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, infrared sauna therapy can be viewed through the lens of:
Warming the Yang: Infrared heat nourishes the Kidney Yang — essential for vitality, metabolism, and immune strength. This is especially beneficial for those with signs of cold, fatigue, or weakness.
Dispelling Cold & Dampness: Infrared therapy helps eliminate internal cold and damp, which are common contributors to chronic pain, poor digestion, and sluggish circulation.
Moving Qi and Blood: The gentle heat encourages free flow of Qi and blood, helping to clear stagnation and promote healing in tissues.
This makes infrared sauna therapy particularly well-suited for those with cold patterns, Yang deficiency, or chronic stagnation in TCM diagnostics contributing to chronic pain, weight gain, inflammation, fertility challenges, and a weak immune system. If you have signs of deficient or excess heat, infrared sauna therapy may not be beneficial for you.
Infrared Sauna Frequency
Your ideal sauna frequency depends on your constitution, current health conditions, and treatment goals. Sessions are 20–40 minutes depending on your health goals, experience level, heat tolerance and practitioner’s recommendation.
In general:
For wellness maintenance, mild tension, or occasional detox: 1 to 2 sessions per week for 20 to 40 minutes can be helpful
For chronic pain, detoxification, immune support, or metabolic rebalancing for hormonal regulation: 2 to 4 sessions per week for 20 to 40 minutes can be helpful
If you are new to infrared sauna therapy and have questions, please reach out or ask your practitioner.

Infrared Sauna FAQ
-
When you arrive for your infrared sauna session, you’ll be guided to a private room where the sauna unit is located. Here’s what you can expect:
Session Duration
Sessions typically last 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your comfort level, experience and what you booked online. You can use the sauna timer to track your timing.
First-time users may start with shorter sessions (10–20 minutes) to allow the body to acclimate to the infrared heat.
What to Wear
You may wear a bathing suit, lightweight clothing, or disrobe and use provided towels to wrap around you or sit on. The goal is to allow maximum skin exposure for effective infrared penetration.
Once You’re In the Sauna
The sauna will gradually heat up to a target temperature (130°F–140°F) but you are welcome to change the temperature to your liking.
Unlike traditional saunas, the air remains more breathable and comfortable. You will begin to sweat more deeply as your core temperature rises — this is normal and therapeutic.
Focus on your breathing, sit in a relaxing position, and listen to your body.
There is relaxing music provided. You are welcome to lower the volume and play your own music or meditation if you’d like, but please keep the volume low and return the Alexa speaker to its original volume before you leave.
After the Session
You may feel relaxed, mildly flushed, and slightly energized.
Be sure to rehydrate thoroughly and allow time to cool down.
Cover your neck and ankles after you walk out. Additional exposure to wind in these areas is not ideal since your pores are very open.
A shower is recommended to remove sweat and released toxins from the skin.
How You Might Feel
Many clients report feeling relaxed, clear-headed, and refreshed.
Some may experience mild fatigue or light-headedness, especially if dehydrated — this typically resolves with rest and hydration. Mineral supplementation may be helpful as well.

Infrared sauna therapy is generally safe, but it is not recommended for:
Individuals who are pregnant
Those with unstable cardiovascular conditions
People with implanted medical devices (such as certain pacemakers or defibrillators) without prior medical clearance
Some implants and devices may be sensitive to infrared heat. If you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or metal implant, obtain medical clearance before using an infrared sauna. Always consult your healthcare provider if you’re unsure about your eligibility.
-
Medical guidance is strongly recommended for individuals with:
Low blood pressure or autonomic dysfunction
Neurological conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis)
Recent surgeries or open wounds
Fever or acute illness
Adrenal fatigue or chronic fatigue syndromes
Use of medications that affect blood pressure, hydration, or thermoregulation (e.g., diuretics, beta-blockers)
-
Before: Hydrate well and avoid heavy meals or alcohol.
After: Continue hydrating and allow your body to cool down gradually. A shower is recommended to rinse off sweat and detoxified substances.
-
This varies by individual, but most people benefit from 2–4 sessions per week, lasting 20–40 minutes each. Frequency should be adjusted based on tolerance and overall health. Beginners should start with 5-15 minutes sessions.

In most cases, it’s recommended to use the infrared sauna before your acupuncture session. The gentle heat can help relax the muscles, improve circulation, and prepare the body to receive acupuncture more effectively. It may also enhance the movement of qi and promote a deeper therapeutic response during treatment.
Using the sauna after acupuncture is safe and beneficial as well. For those with sings of heat or that are sensitive to heat, it is better positioned after acupuncture, when the body has been regulated and the treatment has helped clear or balance excess heat. Even then, sauna sessions should be shorter and closely monitored.
